Holiness and Hebrews 12:14

Hebrews 12:14 is another “proof” text that is used for the peculiar and mystical doctrine known as progressive sanctification. What is wrong with this doctrine? It’s quite simple. It attempts to take ones eyes off of LORD Jesus and was accomplished redemption and puts them onto self, a recipe for doubt in the manner in which they do it.

Don’t get me wrong. We are to make our calling and election sure but this is an admonishment for evaluation of gospel doctrine, not calling for an examination of your behavior patterns as if they would affirm or deny whether one is truly a Christian. Even the false religionists have what can be observed as “good” patterns of conduct but the basis thereof is not from God-given faith but self-righteousness. These are dead works and from the outside they make look as genuine and as authentic as works produced from God-given faith. That is why believers ought to judge by the gospel and not deeds of the flesh.

In any case, the following is the aforementioned verse and interpretation thereof.

Hebrews 12:14 KJVS
Follow peace with all men , and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Saints are striving for the holiness (positional) that they already possess via imputation. We follow that holiness that others may have the same via that they too will see God if, peradventure, they be granted repentance. We follow it for the sake of others to be converted, not to prove our own. Here is another text that uses follow in that manner.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 KJVS
See that none render evil for evil unto any man ; but ever FOLLOW that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men .

It’s not suggesting that one must examine the deeds they do for assurance of conversion. This is not saying for a gospel believer to use their striving or lack thereof as a metric. It is not a Scriptural basis for fruit inspection in a progressive sanctification “Lordship” salvationist sense. The WCF and 1689 both don’t really seem to have a leg to stand on for this issue. Nevertheless, may God be true and every man a liar.

May our faith be in Christ and Him alone. Not the deeds of our hands is some supposed mystical work of the Holy Spirit. Remember the Holy Spirit testifies not of Himself but of Christ. If you believe you have the Spirit and it is producing “works” that take the spotlight off of Him, you may want to check your spirit.

Picture of a sacrifice unacceptable to God. Deeds of our hands produced not in faith. Dirty filthy dead works!

Picture of the sacrifice acceptable to God. Sacrifices offered up through faith in Christ and His ultimate sacrifice

Romans 12:1-2 KJVS
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Would someone please help me understand this?

I had a post that I thought was pretty good and is sitting at 89 votes but payout went to zero. I did edit the post but don’t think that has every affected my payout before. I was trying to see if there were any downvotes but don’t seem to see any. I’m a bit puzzled. I understand if it was downvoted and maybe I’m just not aware of it.
The post in question is:

After doing a bit or research I learned that I can view votes more effectively using the folllowing link:

Still not seeing downvotes.

Would someone please shed some light so I can understand if I fudged something up?

If you wanted to be a legalist, what must you do?

If you wanted to be a legalist, what must you do?

Repent of ALL your sins and we’ll talk. I need to be sure your conversion is authentic.
Accidentally hit your thumb with a hammer during a carpentry project?
I better not hear one peep unless it’s a “Hallelujah!”.
Remember, the law of God is spiritual.
You can’t even think about making one exasperated exclamation.

Trust and Duty–the written commands of Christ our Creator, Lawgiver and Lord Husband

“Antinomianism undermines the true grace of God by eliminating justice from the gospel. It does this is by placing the blame with God’s law rather than with the sinner. It is true, as revealed to us in Romans 5, we would have not known what coveting was had the law not said do not covet. But this does not mean the law was wrong to say do not covet. No, the law was good and holy and just to say this. The problem was not with the law. Rather, the problem was and always is with us. We are sinners. Not only do we attempt to say—I have done enough of the law to make the difference. But we also on top of that sin against the law—we do what the law says not We don’t do what the law says to do.”

For the Elect Alone

Those who are not yet justified in Christ CANNOT obey God or offer God any acceptable sacrifices. Proverbs 15:8 “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD”

Romans 6:20 ”For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those thing is death”

Romans 7:4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we now bear FRUIT FOR GOD. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear FRUIT FOR DEATH.”

Luke 16:15 That which is highly esteemed among humans is abomination…

Only God is Good

Revelation 4:8 KJVS
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him ; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Yes, God is Holy. He is the whole pie, the whole enchilada if you will. Not missing one crumb!

“Does not the good Creator have the right to create however He sees fit?”

Yes, indeed. Reminds me of the parable of the workers in the vineyard as it pertains to their protest of how much they are paid. Likewise, the LORD has every right to do what He wants with His creation and He is justified in dealing with it how He desires. We don’t get a vote in the manner. Thank God.

Matthew 20:15 KJVS
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

Cornbread & Bourbon

Genesis 3
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that…

Any gospel that the natural man can believe in his fallen state is a false gospel.

Excellent read. Highly recommend to like and follow TheNeonGasLamp if you appreciate.

The Neon GasLamp

“Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.””‭‭John‬ ‭3:3‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”‭‭John‬ ‭3:6-7‬ ‭ESV
‬“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself…

The Blood of the Lamb: Cleaning the Darkest Minds

“So, you say you can’t believe on Christ’s death because your sin is too great?

This is like calling a housecleaner and, once they get to your front door, not letting them in because your house is a mess. That would be pretty silly, huh?

The LORD of heaven and earth isn’t going to hang around on your porch while you sort out your trash. Such is the state of man prior to conversion to hold such a presumption.”

See full post at the following link.

If the true Christ did not die for you, believing that a false christ did will not help you

“It really doesn’t matter if this false gospel contains the historical facts (Jesus died on a cross and rose again), because this false gospel replaces the biblical testimony of the work of Christ for a false conditional message which requires a response from the sinner to effectuate the cross. Not merely that, it makes Christ out to be a failure, since most people for whom He died in this universal atonement scheme will perish, and it makes God UNJUST because He still sends sinners to hell in spite of the fact that his son allegedly already paid for their debts. It makes God into a thief.

This is damnable heresy and it is not be defended, made excuses for, or treated with kid gloves. You don’t play nice with a rattlesnake you find on your property, you cut it’s head off and bury it. Why? Because a rattlesnake is dangerous and it can kill you. False gospels are dangerous and they will kill you.”

The Neon GasLamp

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.””‭‭Matthew‬ ‭1:21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Christ came to redeem a specific people from their sins. Christ did not redeem all men at the cross, because Christ did not pay for the sins of all men at the cross. He only paid for the sins of those who were given to Him by the Father before all of creation. Those people were chosen before creation so that the purpose of God in election would stand, and that their works would not be considered in any way. Only the people for whom Christ died will be saved.

A lot of people claim to be saved. Most religious people assume that they are saved. They also assume the salvation of other religious people. This makes sense for the most part, since most religious people are…

Justified by Works, but Don’t Think of it That Way?

“If the non-elect are condemned ON ACCOUNT OF THEIR WORKS, how do the elect live with the notion that works of faith are necessary for their justification? I will say the one simple thing I keep on saying: God does not count faith as the righteousness. Neither the initial act of faith nor the continuing acts of faith are the basis of justification. God counts the righteousness of Christ earned for the elect alone as the righteousness. The elect have legal union with Christ’s obedience to death for the elect. The elect come to share in this righteousness by legal imputation. The righteousness credited ( a free gift received, Romans 5:17) results in the justification of elect. But you cannot have faith ( beginning or continuing) in this righteousness if you have not yet heard and understood and assented to what the gospel reveals about election.”

For the Elect Alone

Run to Win the Prize, 2010, Crossway, Thomas R. Schreiner

This little book is from lectures given at Oak Hill in London. It’ s a summary of the thinking found in the book Schreiner wrote with Caneday, The Race Set Before Us (2001, IVP) Schreiner again engages in some special pleading for a “paradox” (p73) in which works are necessary but also for not focusing on works but Christ. How it’s possible to rationally live in that paradox is not so clear. I guess words like “premeditation” and “intention” and “byproduct” play a big part.

I would not say that Schreiner’s thesis comes from the “new perspective”. There’s no need to go to NT Wright, Norman Shepherd, or John Armstrong, to make his case. Rather, he goes to Jonathan Edwards against John Calvin to argue that works of faith are necessary for justification. In this respect, Schreiner is simply making…
